Meau

Meau Hewitt (Blaricum, May 10, 2000) is a Dutch singer-songwriter who performs under the name MEAU.

Meau Hewitt grew up in Weesp and attended Vechtstede College. As a child, she took singing and piano lessons from the age of five and sang with the Children for Children choir for three years (2008-2011). She sang solos in the songs Snoepje (2010) and Jongensmeid (about a girl who is boyish; 2011). In the years that followed, she performed as a member of Babette Labeij’s (background) choir, including The Passion, All You Need Is Love and the finals of The Voice of Holland.

After high school she followed the preliminary training at the pop department of the Conservatory of Amsterdam. During this period she focused on writing Dutch texts, inspired by artists such as Eefje de Visser and Spinvis. She completed the pop/rock course at the Herman Brood Academy in Utrecht in 2021. Her debut EP Kalmte was released in June 2021.

Her first song Kalmte was released on September 4, 2020. Hewitt called 3FM to ask if it was possible to plug her single herself, without the help of a professional plugger. However, at that moment she did not realize that she was live on the radio in Timur Perlin’s lunch show. Partly thanks to this spontaneous action, 3FM granted her regular airplay and she became known to a larger radio audience. Perlin also promised Hewitt to be her plugger. Later she also attracted the attention of NPO Radio 2 with her Dutch-language music.

At the time of the second lockdown (as a result of the corona outbreak), MEAU released the single Weet, which also ended up on the playlist of NPO 3FM. Successor Closed was released in February 2021 and also reached the playlist of NPO 3FM as well as NPO Radio 2. She produced this song together with Blanks. In the first half of 2021, she worked full-time on completing her first EP Kalmte. This was released on June 25, 2021 and contains six personal songs that describe her feelings and personal development of the past year. Due to the corona crisis, she was unable to perform in front of an audience for a long time and had to postpone her club tour. Her first public performance took place on June 12, 2021 as a support act for Racoon.

In September 2021, MEAU released the single You did that. The song entered the tip parade of the Dutch Top 40 at the end of September and in October both the Single Top 100 and the Mega Top 30. Shortly afterwards, MEAU won the 3FM Talent Award. On November 19, 2021, You Did That entered the Top 40 and was declared Alarm Disc, 3FM Megahit and NPO Radio 2 Top Song in the same week. In the fall of 2021, MEAU also announced its first club tour. The four concerts planned for March 2022 sold out in less than five weeks. MEAU took part in the performance of The Streamers in the Winter Efteling on December 26, 2021. You Did That became her first number one hit in the winter of 2021/2022. The song reached first place in the Dutch Top 40, the Dutch Single Top 100, the Mega Top 30 and the Belgian Ultratop 50.

In January 2022, Step maar in bij mij, a collaboration with Paul de Munnik, was published. In April 2022, Meau was the support act for Suzan & Freek in the Ziggo Dome. In June 2022, MEAU launched Racoon Dans my eyes closed. The song Keep Driving was released in September 2022, in which MEAU, as she said herself, wanted to forget the unpleasant events from her past and move forward. The song was declared NPO Radio 2 Top Song by NPO Radio 2.
At the beginning of 2023, MEAU released two new songs, Helen and Hou me hold me. On May 9, 2023, MEAU released her album 22.

In addition to the title track and her hit singles That’s what you did, Keep driving and Dance my eyes closed (with Racoon), the album also contains a number of new songs such as Back in my arms and Unreachable. During the talk show Renze on Sunday, MEAU was surprised with two records. MEAU’s That’s What You Did went triple platinum and she won gold for her album 22, a week after the album was released. In June 2023, Dream the Dark Away, a collaboration with Pommelien Thijs, was published. The song is on Thijs’ debut album By accident. They performed the song live in De Roma, at the Ghent Festivities and at Crammerock, but also on television in Renze in early July. In September 2023 she took part in the television program Best Singers. From December to February 2024, she went on a tour named after her debut album. On February 1, 2024, she released the song Stukje van mijn, which is about online shaming.

She won an Edison in March 2024 for her debut album 22.
