Golden Earring
Golden Earring was a Dutch rock band formed in The Hague in 1961. The band’s lineup has undergone various changes over the years, but its most notable members have included George Kooymans (guitar, vocals), Rinus Gerritsen (bass, keyboards), Barry Hay (vocals, guitar, flute), and Cesar Zuiderwijk (drums).
Golden Earring achieved international success in the 1970s with their album “Moontan,” which included the hit single “Radar Love.” The song became their signature track and remains one of the most iconic rock songs of the era. They continued to release successful albums throughout the 1970s and 1980s, earning acclaim for their blend of hard rock, psychedelic rock, and progressive rock influences.
In addition to “Radar Love,” Golden Earring had several other hit singles, including “Twilight Zone,” “When the Lady Smiles,” and “Going to the Run.” Their music often featured catchy riffs, memorable melodies, and thoughtful lyrics, reflecting the band’s diverse musical influences and creative vision.
Golden Earring’s longevity and enduring popularity have cemented their status as one of the most iconic rock bands in the Netherlands and beyond. They have sold millions of albums worldwide and continue to perform live concerts, captivating audiences with their timeless rock music and electrifying stage presence.
At the end of 2020, George Kooymans told the rest of the band that he had been diagnosed with ALS and had to stop performing. This news came out on February 5, 2021. Barry Hay and Cesar Zuiderwijk indicated that they did not want to find a replacement for Kooymans and that this meant the end of the band.
